The History of the Zum Schlüssel Brewery

1632

The journey of today’s Zum Schlüssel brewery began under the name “Zu den drei Königen.” That year, Johann von Monheim laid the foundation for a cultural legacy that endures to this day.

1850

Jakob Schwenger acquires the historic building, bringing dedication and a spirit of innovation. He opens both a bakery and brewery, blending the arts of baking and brewing, and thus begins the brewery’s golden age. This year marks the true birth of the Hausbrauerei.

1913

The Zum Schlüssel restaurant opens its doors—a place that quickly becomes synonymous with warmth and togetherness. Its name, inspired by a medieval custom, stands as a symbol of tradition and local roots.

1936

Master brewer Carl Gatzweiler from Neuss, along with his wife Maria and their sons Simon and Jacob, takes over the pub. Their extensive renovations set the tone for the decades to come.

1938

After extensive renovations, the brewery reopens on St. Martin's Day, shining in new splendor. Now firmly in the hands of the Gatzweiler family, they proudly carry on its legacy with dedication and commitment.

1989

Karl-Heinz Gatzweiler, who continues to run the family business today, revitalizes the brewery with great love and respect for its history. He creates a warm, welcoming space that becomes the heart of Düsseldorf’s old town.
